Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1 is getting closer, and The Elder Scrolls Online team is detailing the processnew opportunities in developing a direct sequel to the original main storyline.
In a new devblog, one of the decisions had to do with the then-upcoming 10th anniversary, and the decision came to bring back the Worm Cult and create a true sequel. This opened up opportunities since with their prior Chapters model, you didn’t have to complete certain content in order to play through the new stuff, so the continuity didn’t have to be there. Senior writer Rich Baker says that the team saw opportunities in this.
“Because Seasons of the Worm Cult was conceived as a sequel, we could have characters refer to those events and set a new story on top of that pedestal.” Still, you could jump into this new content without even having completed the original story, but it will be much more meaningful and richer if you do. The ESO team has been working to make the game more accessible to newer players, including tweaks to the early game, recent visual updates to the starting areas, and more. So this is a sequel but there are still no gates.
As part of these decisions to do a sequel, it also gave them opportunities to bring back characters that the community loved (or hated). “We decided to take a step back from that set of characters and look to some interesting-but-underutilized characters who deserved a little more time in the spotlight,” Baker says.
Since this is a two-part release, they had more story flexibility too.A Chapter, needed to be self-contained.
Part 1 will release on June 2nd for PC / Mac, along with Update 46, and June 18th for Xbox and playstation.
