Old School RuneScape ‘Pauses’ Community Servers Project Zanaris Indefinitely, But Has Plans for the Team’s Work

Amid Jagex’ confirmed restructuring, Project Zanaris, an effort that was aiming to create custom community servers for Old School RuneScape, has ended. The team has an update on what happened and what’s next.

“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to pause work on Zanaris indefinitely,” the post begins, emphasizing on a commitment to delivering the best experience for all. “The truth is, there are other areas of the core Old School experience that deserve more attention right now,” calling the project “ambitious and innovative”, but that it would have taken resources for a long time to really come to fruition. Employees have been moved into different positions,  with some moved to man OSRS development.
Back at RuneFest in March, Ed sat down with some of the developers to talk about the potential and what they had in the works for this project. Project Zanaris was inspired by community efforts and custom challenges that led  to features like Ironman mode.
The work that the team did will be incorporated, in certain ways, into OSRS in a number of ways, offering new options for time-limited events,  improved cloud server technology, better service in underserved regions, and a whole bunch of customization options. Options could make their way into those limited events or experimental content, community events, and even curated temporary worlds.
