The Japanese Game Preservation Society could be shut down, with thousands of titles and an extensive repository of magazines and books lost as a result. In a detailed report from Time Extension, it was revealed that the society has less than a handful of months to receive the financial support it needs to continue.
While the society does receive funding from the Japanese government, how it’s used is limited. As it can only pay for the salary of employees, and not for the space needed to house these valuable pieces of games history. Which leaves the Japanese game Preservation Society in a tricky situation. However, the organization is allowed to receive outside donations to continue funding its operation.
The Japanese Game Preservation Society has catalogued a range of media concerning Japanese video games, ranging from floppy discs, magazines, books, and even contributed to preserving Japanese mobile games. If the organization shuts down, it would be a huge blow to the preservation of Japanese video games, as no one else seems to be doing the work to such an extensive degree.
