EA Cancels ‘Superhero Sandbox’ Marvel Black Panther Game and Shuts Developer Cliffhanger Studios

EA has shut down Cliffhanger Games, a subsidiary that was at work on a third-person Black Panther game with Marvel Games. With it, the original Wakanda-set game was also canceled.

The studio closure and the project cancellation are part of EA’s third layoff announcement of 2025. According to IGN, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele emailed staff about Cliiffhanger’s shutdown and other mobile and central team layoffs, saying that the cuts are to “put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities”. This is similar to justifications for layoffs by EA and others in the past, with restructuring efforts coalescing around core IPs, including owned properties, and a greater risk aversion.
Miele says that EA’s focus is now on  Apex Legends, Battlefield, The Sims, and Skate. The Star Wars: Jedi series, Mass Effect, and the other Marvel project, Iron Man, in development at Motive, continue.
There’s no word on how many employees were affected by this round of cuts, but it’s expected to be lower than the 300 estimated jobs lost last month across Respawn and EA support teams.
