MMO Friday Fight Round 28: Player Skill Vs Gearscore

What really matters when determining a player’s “value” when entering a dungeon or raid? Sure, you can use a DPS meter to figure out if a player has pulled their weight in battle, but what is it that contributes the most to obtaining that number? In one corner, we have Gearscore, a quick indicator of a character’s power based on the loot they’ve acquired. In the other corner, we have player skill, which can be comprised of hours of practice and practical knowledge. Both are major factors in a player’s ability to help their party achieve a win. But, just like every Friday Fight, in the battle of player superiority, there can be only one winner.

Gearscore
Gear is the reward loop that drives many MMOs. It’s the reason players grind dungeons, chase world bosses, and rerun raids. A high gear score reflects time investment and a history of past success. In PvE, it often acts as a gatekeeping tool, ensuring players are properly equipped to take on challenging content. In PvP, it creates a sense of hierarchy and achievement.
Gear score is also measurable and clear. There’s no ambiguity in “Item Level 620.” You either meet the requirement or you don’t. And in games like World of Warcraft or Destiny 2, having the best gear means you’ve overcome the hardest content or grinded your way through the highest tiers. That must mean something.
Player Skill
Flashy gear doesn’t always equal talent. Player skill – knowing mechanics, timing interrupts, managing cooldowns, positioning correctly – is what truly separates the good from the great. In many MMOs, especially those with action combat like Elder Scrolls Online or Black Desert Online, an under-geared but skilled player can outperform someone with top-tier gear who has no clue what they’re doing.
Skill-focused systems reward practice and learning, not just time investment. They empower players to experiment with builds, adapt to challenges, and improve over time. And in PvP, especially, player skill can completely negate gear disparities. Just ask any rogue who’s been outplayed by a clever healer.
My Take
While both matter, I’m giving the win to player skill. Gear score reflects investment, but skill reflects mastery. The best MMOs find ways to balance the two, rewarding time spent while still giving experienced players the chance to shine. In the end, outplaying an opponent or executing a tough mechanic perfectly feels far more satisfying than simply having the bigger numbers.
