Star Citizen has announced it’s foregoing its annual “CitizenCon” fan-focused in-person event and instead opting for a “Citizencon Direct.” While a traditional CitizenCon typically has announcements and showcases, the Direct version will supposedly do much the same, only in digital format.
According to the announcement post, the streams about Star Citizen and its Squadron 42 spinoff will all be free to watch via YouTube and Twitch, then uploaded onto the YouTube channel immediately after. This digital edition of CitizenCon will take place on October 11.
For those who’re still looking to connect with other Star Citizens, per se, they say there’ll be watch parties, and there’s still the “Bar Citizen” initiative taking place throughout the year.
It seems some of the rationale is to actually get things done by their deadline and breaking the curse of a certain project of theirs being perpetually two years away: “[O]ur primary focus this year is on pushing Squadron 42 toward its targeted release next year, and continuing to improve the overall playability of Star Citizen with every patch,” the post reads.
Given the reported pre-event crunch and the rolling back of certain Star Citizen Alpha 4.0 features only weeks after being shared at CitizenCon 2024, that may be for the better.
